With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looking to be the lynchpin of Phase 4, few directors are shaping pop culture on the level that he is. Renewed interest in his Spider-Man movies has taken off thanks to Alfred Molina’s jaw-dropping appearance in the Spider-Man: No Way Hometeaser. Today, Raimi is on top of the cinematic world, with numerous critical successes and A-list blockbusters under his belt. With a successful TV show, Ash vs Evil Dead, and the announcement of Evil Dead Risecoming in 2022, the franchise is as healthy as ever. The four films - three in Raimi’s original Evil Dead trilogy plus a 2013 remake - artfully combined slapstick humor with gruesomely heavy levels of gore to create a singular horror experience. While it was a hit, it wasn’t until the release of the sequel six years later that the series became a phenomenon. In 1981, director Sam Raimi released a small horror film called T he Evil Dead that he and his friends had shot in the Tennessee woods on a tight budget. ![]()
